Eye Problems/Glaucoma
Eye problems are reported in 11% of the Bouvier dogs surveyed. Glaucoma is the most common eye problem followed by cataracts. Both are considered inherited and there is extensive research being done to identify genetic markersfor both. The BHF has been an active participant in several of these studies, providing funding, education, and DNA samples.

Ophthalmologist (eye) exam
The eye exam is done to evaluate for inherited eye diseases such as cataracts and glaucoma. It requires a visit to a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist and can be done once the dog’s eyes are open. Early identification of eye problems and establishing a relationship with an ophthalmologist is very important in case of future emergencies. Eye exams should be repeated annually to establish your dog’s baseline eye health, and monitor for changes with each visit. https://ofa.org/diseases/eye-disease/
